Preferable way to use two servers

I use data from two SQL servers to make up a webpage. What is the preferable
way to fetch the data.
- Make two connection objects and connect to both servers. or
- Fetch data throug one connection by means of a linked server?mike,
From a security point of view, and probably also performance, two
connections from the web server.

POSTED AGAIN- DISTRIBUTED TRANSACTION

Hi,
I have two sql servers with SQL2000 service pack 3 which are linked by the
"Link Server". When i use the "begin tran" (distributed transaction) in
stored procedure, i am getting the following error.
"Server: Msg 8525, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new
transaction or the NULL transaction. "
The following article talks about this problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=834849
But, both servers are SQL 2000 in my case. Any help?
Thanks,
VijayVijay,
Try rerun the same Instcat.sql described in the kb again on each node. This
will ensure that they have the correct catalog sprocs.

What do you mean "It is working for other distributed queries". If you only
encounter the error on enlisting a distributed transaction, I suggest you
take a look at your linkedserver logins. Also, check to make sure DTC
services are using proper accounts. If they're started under LocalSystem, it
will not have access to network resources. If you are going to make any
changes to your DTC services, you will have to restart SQL server for it to
takes effect.

Fresh Install of SQL Servers 2000

Everything works OK

Add SQL SP3

SQL Server process crashes on any extended stored procedure execution. Some DBCC commands (checkdb but not showcontig) also crash the server process.

I talked to Microsoft about it, and it seems that there is one MDAC hotfix that will report a successful installation no matter what. Out of 4 machines, I only had one go bad, but I still have 30 to go...

The fix in my case was as follows:
1) run C:\SQL2KSP3\x86\other\sqlredis.exe /t:C:\Extract /c

2) run C:\Extract\mdac_qfe.exe
2a) reboot.
3) Re-run SQL SP3 setup

It fixed my particular problem, but I don't know if it will do anything to yours. Can you run extended stored procs in Query Analyzer?
~Matt|||Unfortunately this fix didn't work for me.

I don't having any stored procedures to test, this is a very simple setup for my new web server.

Possible? SQL Svr obtaining data via SOAP/XML from another SQL Sv

Hello All,
My challenge is to create a process that will bring together data from two
SQL servers (one local, one remote through the internet). The task is to
create a Stored Procedure that will perform a relational query based on data
from the two databases and return the resulting record set to a Crystal
Report. The remote database is part of our company's CRM HOSTED solution
which provides data accessible via a SOAP/XML interface.
I have implemented solutions in the past using a SOAP/XML data feed, whereby
I used VBScript, MSXML, MSSOAP to connect, query, parse and insert data into
an SQL database. For this implementation, however, I want to avoid this
method at all costs since there would be a tremendous overhead of converting,
maintaining and updating dozens of Crystal Reports to this new environment.
Instead, I would like to be able to make an SQL Stored Procedure invoke the
SOAP call and, in turn, load and process the resulting XML dataset as though
it were an SQL Record Set. I have found technical leads supporting the theory
that I might be able to achieve this goal. The following are technical
"bread-crumbs" I found or technical areas I have investigated thus far:
(1) SOAP/XML can be delivered from an MSSQL server in several ways via "AS
XML" functionality provided in SELECT verb. I am hypothesizing that the CRM
can deliver the XML data per a direct SQL query through this method. The nut
to crack here is that our XML data would be delivered back to the caller
"shrink-wrapped" in a SOAP Envelope and thus there would be the task of
unwrapping the XML dataset from the SOAP envelope upon the return of data to
the caller.
(2) MSSQL provides a method via "OPENXML" to open and parse an XML source
file and associate data returned with SELECT / Relational logic. CAVEAT: I
have only seen the OPENXML deal with XML data stored in FILE resources...not
an XML object such as that found implemented in the MSXML object classes
which I have used in VBSCRIPT.
I am trying to efficiently architect a solution without having to develop
too many components and excessive rework of prior development. My goal is to
perform this data query task ALL within the MSSQL environment. Any direction
or validation is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Karl Engvold

In SQLServer 2005 we have Native Web Services Support. This allows one to expose a stored procedure as a web service. The stored procedcure could be written in CLR or T-SQL. We also generate WSDL on demand. The SOAP responses contain "rowsets" to captu
re the output of select statements. These rowsets use the diffgram format on the wire and as such can be mapped to datasets on the client. Using a VS>net proxy generator to generate the client code does this automatically for you.

Possible to Export EM SQL Registrations?

I have a development laptop that I frequently need to reimage (ghost). I have about 25 SQL Servers registered in Enterprise Manager. Some use Windows Auth, some SQL Auth. Can I export the registration information so I don’t have to re-enter it every
time I rebuild my laptop?
I have been able to export/import the server aliases using this key (this works fine): [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer \Client\ConnectTo]
I have also exported/imported: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\SQLEW\Registered Servers X]
But All I get are the groups, no servers.
TIA

Possible to assign for each CPU a different process within one SQL Server 2005 on a multicore se

Hi all,

is it possible to assign for each CPU a different process within one SQL Server 2005?

I got 2 servers (each 4 CPUs; 64 bit system) which should be able to failover, but on the other hand there are reporting/analysing applications and totally different sharepoint/other applications that should be hosted seperately, each on one physical server.

Thanks a lot for any help!

Within one SQL Server? No not that I am aware of. You can use the affinity mask option to exclude certain CPUs from an entire instance of SQL Serfver, but you can't do it by individual databases within an instance.

Hi,

It is not possible to restrict CPU to work for certain task.

Ports reported as servers via SQLDMO

Does anyone know how to get SQLDMO not to interpret ports
as server instances? I presume this is due to named
pipes being turned off on these servers.
SQLDMO.NameList sqlServers = sqlApp.ListAvailableSQLServers();
This misbehaves for a SQL Server named instance that is
specified as "somewhere.domain.net, 1433".
The ListAvailableSQLServers() method comes back with...
"somewhere.domain.net"
"1433"
Any suggestions? The method ListAvailableSQLServers() is practically
useless. What are you trying to accomplish?

ListAvailableSQLServers() does do that for me, but it
looks like it uses dbnetlib.dll whereas I need it to use
dbmssocn.dll in order to detect TCP/IP connections.|||You know that ListAvailableSQLServers() sees only those servers that are
being broadcast. If all your SQL instances happen to be detectable that way,
lucky you! That's not common in most bigger environments.

machine you are running from, or there is garbage in the Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SuperSocketNetLib,
which is effectively what get enumerated.
